SPECIAL MEETING: ANNUAL TEAL TALLY PARTY

Fourth Annual Teal Tally Party: Our annual Teal Tally Party was held on March 29th with a record breaking turnout! This was a celebration of those women who have been fighting with ovarian cancer for 5 years or more - with each honored with a special gift. With family, friends, good food, and such inspirational women it was the usual joyous event!

A special "Making A Difference" recognition was made to Donna Asher and Connie Reese for their dedication and loyalty during what has been a very difficult couple of years for them. The kind of dedication they have shown is truly above and beyond, and definitely Makes A Difference!

As always we used this opportunity to also honor our Volunteer of the Year. This year the award went to Elaine Hildebrand who has been serving on the board, manning the survivors tent every year, and is at virtually every event. Whenever something is needed, Elaine is always ready to help. She is one of those quiet volunteers, behind the scenes making sure that everything runs so smoothly. Thank you, Elaine!

Photos below are from various members. If you want copies of any of them sent to you by email contact Sharon.

LEGISLATIVE OPPORTUNITIES:

There are some very important legislative efforts going on right now which need your support. These include:

You can help make a difference by contacting your senators. The more people who contact them, the better, so please have family members, friends, co-workers - everyone possible contact them.

Christina Flanigan, who gave such a wonderful presentation at a recent Meeting on legislative efforts, can be reached for guidance by clicking here to email her.

To assist you, here is what to say to your senators:

1. Be sure to thank the senators for all they ahve already done in passing Johanna's Law last year and for funding the Dept of Defence ovarian cancer research program.

2. Ask them to please support the $9 million in funding for Johanna's Law for the upcoming FY 2008 Labor, HHS, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. This funding was authorized by Public Law 109-475, Johanna's Law, which was signed into law by the president in January. Senator Menendez is circulating a bi-partisan letter in support of this funding.

3. Ask them to please support the $20million in funding for the Dept of Defense's Congressionally Directed Research for ovarian cancer research in FY 2008 Defense Appropriations bill. Senators Snowe and Reed are circulating a bi-partisan letter in support of funding the ovarian, breast, and prostate cancer programs. In addition to saving Texas women or improving their chances at a better life after an ovarian cancer diagnosis, a significant portion of this funding goes to MD Anderson in Houston.

NOTES FROM PAST MEETINGS:

The April meeting was a very, very special one - our 3rd Annual Teal Tally Party! We celebrated those survivors who have met and surpassed the milestone 5 year mark of survivorship and provided gifts to them, ate good food, talked, laughed, welcomed new volunteers and survivors....it was a wonderful time! Many thanks to all who helped out, but most particularly to the organizers - Donna Asher, Connie Reese, and Debra Roper.

Our 5 year survivors included Liz, Mary Ann, Elaine, Kay, Diane, Donna, Susan, Kitna, Linda....ranging from 5 years to Diane, our 20 YEAR SURVIVOR!!!. Congratulations to all! You are inspirational!

We also took this opportunity to award our 2007 Volunteer of the Year - Christy Flannigan! Many of you know of Christy from the emails we get regularly relating to legislative opportunities such as the recent passing of Johanna's Law. Without Christy's experience and expertise, most of us would have had no idea how to support this important initiative, and she continues to keep us apprised of what we can do from a legislative standpoint. She has been tireless in her efforts for the NOCC both locally and on a national level, as well as with OCNA. THANK YOU, CHRISTY!!!

At meetings in 2006 and early 2007 Dr. Mark Messing did presentations at Meetings on topics requested by the volunteers. Dr. Messing, for those that don't know him, is a gynecological oncologist who serves on the DFW NOCC Advisory Board and has provided countless hours of volunteer work with our group. He has made numerous presentations to our group and we are very grateful for his efforts. He kindly allowed us to provide a summary of two of his recent presentations which can be downloaded by clicking below:
